Year 9 - Science

Mythbusters
Ever wondered if wearing a tongue ring will increase your chances of being struck by lightening? What about if a wooden canon could explode and destroy a whole village? Can ninja’s actually catch an arrow? These are the types of myths you will be investigating in this subject that is based on the hit TV show Mythbusters. In this subject we will investigate the science (or lack of) behind the myths and we will attempt to replicate some of the experiments from the show!

Science Talent Search
This subject involves entering the Science Talent Search, a state wide competition with prizes. It is run by the Science Teachers Association of Victoria. You will have the choice on what you investigate and how. You might choose to do an investigation project (prac), a creative writing piece, build a working model, a game, a computer program, a poster, a photography exhibition or a video. The topic will be up to you.

Science Drama Awards
Do you LOVE drama? Here is an opportunity to meet your Science requirements by producing your own drama play. You will choose a science concept (maybe the life story of a scientist or the environmental impact on a village) and perform it in a drama, musical drama, mime, dance or a comedy skit. You will make a video of your production and send it in for judging. If it is one of the best in the state you may get to perform it to an audience.

Rockets
What is the history of Rockets? What are the principles of Rocket Flight? These are some of the questions you will investigate in this subject. You will do a lot of practical activities such as building your own car rocket, balloon rockets, water rockets and air rockets. This subject will be a lot of fun and you will even get to design your own rocket!

Robotics
Robots are being used more and more in society. In this subject we look at:
·         How robots are used in industry
·         How they are developed
·         The role computers play in robot development
·         Can robots be developed into intelligent beings
This subject will have a lot of practical activities using LEGO and various other computer programs.

Science in Movies
Ever watched a movie and wanted to know if what you saw on the screen could actually be real?In this subject we investigate movies such as Star Wars, Independence Day, The Matrix and Road Runner Cartoons to see if the science is actually real. We research and conduct experiments to see if any of it is actually real?

Cosmetic Science
Yes there is Science involved in Cosmetics! Would you like to investigate how to make your own perfume? What about how soap is made? Does hair conditioner really work? All those questions will be answered and more as we look at the science of Make up!

Lights Camera Action
This is all about the science behind Movie Making! How do we make moving images? How does a camera work? How are special effects made? How do sounds add atmosphere in movies? We will investigate all these questions and more as you set about developing skills to make your own movie!

Practical Science
Do you get bored just sitting in science class listening to the teacher? Would you prefer to do pracs every lesson? That is what this subject is about; we develop your practical skills and understanding of science through fun activities.

Psychology – an introduction
This workshop will give students an overview of what Psychology is and will look at a few diverse areas such as attitudes, discrimination and stereotyping, mental illness, child development and social responsibility. There will be a focus on practical research.
