Humanities

The Humanities Department aims to develop students who are engaged in their own learning and who are developing confidence in their ability to make a difference in areas they feel passionate about. Students are given opportunities throughout the course to develop awareness and ownership of their role in society and the environment.

To this end the Humanities curriculum at Dromana Secondary College is constantly evolving in response to our changing world and the students’ individual differences, needs and learning styles.
The Humanities team of teachers build units of work that are closely aligned with the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) which incorporate thinking skills and tools, opportunities for enhancement and which are regularly based in ‘inquiry-style’ learning

Curriculum The study of Humanities is one of the core areas of study from Year 7 through to Year 10. Each year students are exposed to learning experiences within the study areas of:

History

Geography

Economics and

Civics and Citizenship

In addition, at Year 10 students are also able to take part in the hands on experience of Work and Career Education, as well as an introduction to Legal Studies and Small Business Management. This leads into a wide variety of VCE subjects. In 2009 our VCE students have selected to study Business Management, Legal Studies and Classical Societies and Cultures within the domain of the Humanities Department.

Humanities is often referred to as the ‘custodian of society’ it is that area of study where the.......

What ifs....

Who did....

Who thought.....

Can I....

Where is......

Why did they......

all come together to help shape our view of the world today. To enable this type of inquiry to be undertaken students are taught skills in research, communication, processing and interpretation, empathy, decision making, team work, referencing and ICT to assist them to answer the questions that will set them on the path they need for future involvement in work or study.

To celebrate their success and learning students have opportunities to participate in excursions to travelling exhibitions (Pompeii is looking good for 2009), Medieval Day, Year 9 students run ruMAD (Are you making a difference?) events that are so varied the mind boggles, Youth Parliament, The National History Challenge and a huge variety of competitions run by government and non-government organisations that occur throughout each year.
