The Transition Program

The Transition Program has been designed to ensure all students who choose Dromana Secondary College feel comfortable and familiar with the College before enrolling. Transition also makes the move from primary school to secondary college as smooth as possible.

Many Grade 6 students are familiar with the College, having visited with their Primary School for our Grade 5 program . This is a day when we open our doors exclusively to Grade 5 students and their teachers. It offers a taste of secondary college to the Grade 5 students as they experience our four period day and participate in a variety of classes. They are guided through the day by Dromana Secondary College students and have the opportunity to meet students and staff from other primary schools.

The next stage in the process is when the Dromana Secondary College Transition Coordinator, Principal or an Assistant Principal visits the main feeder primary schools. These visits happen in term one and are informal sessions that allows Grade 6 students an opportunity to talk with Year 7 students, to ask them questions about the college and about Year 7 in particular.

Grade 6 students then receive an invitation to Dromana Secondary College 's Open Evening in March. The Open Evening offers the opportunity for visitors to the College to talk to students and college staff about the curriculum and the extra activities offered to the students.

Tours of the College are also promoted through the primary schools and many families are now choosing to view the college during the day.

Application for Enrolment Forms are distributed to Grade 6 students by their primary school in May. The forms are returned to the primary schools which then collate this information and submit placement requests to the various secondary colleges in June. Communication and cooperation between primary schools and secondary colleges is very important during the entire year. Parents are notified by their primary school of their secondary college placement in August.

After families are notified by the primary school, students who have selected Dromana Secondary College will begin to receive information as well as invitations to attend Year 7 Information Evenings at the College.

An information evening regarding the Laptop Program is held in early October to allow parents to make an informed decision about this optional extra for Years 7-9. This is an opportunity for our incoming students and their parents/guardians to meet with students, teachers and the information technology experts involved in the program. Applications for this program are accepted before the information evening.

The  Information Evening is held early in December and is for all of our incoming Year 7 students and their parents/guardians, and allows the students to meet their new form group and form teacher as well as some of their subject teachers. Students visit their new form room and start to become familiar with their new home in the college.

A week later  the new students return for Orientation Day . This is a common day for all secondary colleges. Dromana Secondary College students have their first opportunity to take the bus to their new secondary college. This is an exciting day as students begin to get to know their form group and form teacher and start to find their way around the college. .

.

Of course, one of the most important features of our Transition Program is the Year 7 Camp . Once the students have settled into the College routine, each of the subschools goes to camp at Philip Island for four days. This well organised camp is activities based, and provides another venue for students to meet and interact with their classmates and teachers.

During the year, many more activities will allow Year 7 students the chance to experience the value of being a member of our college community. A large number of our Year 7 students enjoy the opportunity of revisiting their Primary School with the Transition Coordinator as well as volunteering to be involved with Open Evening or acting as a student guide for Grade 5 and 6 students visiting Dromana Secondary College .

The Transition Program represents the value the college places on each student and their wellbeing and the range of support structures in place gives every opportunity for students to make a happy and positive start to their secondary college years.
