Dromana Secondary College has four junior subschools. The names of these subschools are derived from the local Bunurong tribal language. The subschool names are:
Bundjil/Dantun/Lowan Nurong/Palina Tuan/Thara/Tadjeri Turnang/Winjeel/Yoolawil
In each subschool, there are usually two year seven classes, two year eight's and two year nine's giving a total of about 150 students. Each class has a form teacher who usually teaches them for one or more subjects. Each subschool has a subschool leader. The classes are housed in special areas of the college with four main classrooms and a larger meeting area. Each subschool also has a locker area, a staffroom for their teachers and an area to eat lunch and relax at lunchtimes.
The subschool system was designed to assist the transition of students from primary school into secondary school. Year 7 students have significant teachers who teach them for a number of classes. This more closely resembles the primary school situation, making it easier for new students to adapt.
The subschool leaders and form teachers are the main points of contact for parents who are encouraged to keep in contact with their child's subschool.
Each subschool elects student leaders who represent their peers at student leader meetings. Numerous school activities are organised by these capable young people.
