About the project:
The ‘Students for the Biosphere’ project arose out of the Dromana Cluster of Schools’ Sustainable Schools program in partnership with CERES.
It recognises and celebrates the unique environment of the Mornington Peninsula encouraging students, parents and the local community to play an active role in the preservation of indigenous flora and fauna, the conservation and management of natural resources and the sustainable development of an urban biosphere region.
In 2006, the ‘Students for the Biosphere’ project received considerable federal funding under VEGPSP (Values Education Good Practice Schools Project), where links were made between Values Education and students taking responsibility for managing and caring for their local environment. The project is funded for the next 18 months although it is hoped that it will sustain itself beyond this time.
A student leadership team consisting of representatives from each of the cluster schools will be established to drive the project within each school. This leadership team will participate in regular planning meetings, attend specific functions and conferences then report their learning back to individual schools.
