Mathematics Learning Domain

At Dromana College, the Mathematics Learning Domain focuses on helping our students develop a range of mathematical skills and understandings that can be applied in many future pathways. Whilst compulsory for Years 7 to 10, students are encouraged to continue with Mathematics in both Years 11 and 12.

 Once a fortnight, Year 7 and 8 classes have the opportunity to work with another class of the same year level in an open learning space for Numeracy Rotations.  Students are split into four groups and rotate through four different hands on mathematical activities which concentrate on building a strong foundation of skills that teachers can build on in regular classes.

Mathematics teachers work with students to modify their program to meet individual needs. All students at Dromana College are extensively assessed in Mathematics, and this assessment forms the basis for the student’s future learning program. These individual needs are addressed within mixed ability classes at Years 7 to 9 and more focused options at Years 10 to 12.

 At Year 10, students have options for their Mathematical pathway.  They have a choice of:

  • Year 10 Numeracy which caters for students that will follow a VCAL course in Year 11 and 12
  • Year 10 Mathematics which caters for those students wanting to follow a General/Further Mathematics and Mathematical Methods course in Year 11 and 12
  • Year 10 Extension Mathematics which allows higher achieving students to be well prepared for a Mathematics Methods/Specialist course in Year 11 and 12.

The Mathematics curriculum incorporates textbooks, websites, both scientific and CAS calculators, mathematics related software including Mathletics, puzzles, games, NAPLAN based problems and problem-solving activities.
