VCE SPECIALIST MATHS

SPECIALIST MATHS UNIT 1/2

Students must have been highly successful in Year 10 Extension Mathematics and have achieved high GAT results.

This subject must be taken in conjunction with Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2.

Specialist Mathematics is required by students needing a strong Mathematical background for entry into University. Some University courses may give bonus to ATAR for this subject.

Specialist Mathematics consists of the following areas of study:

  • Algebra and Structure
  • Arithmetic and Number
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Geometry
  • Measurement and Trigonometry
  • Graphs of linear and non-linear relations
  • Statistics

In undertaking these units, students are expected to be able to apply techniques, routines and processes involving:

  • rational, real and complex arithmetic
  • sets, lists and tables
  • diagrams and geometric constructions
  • algebraic manipulation
  • equations
  • graphs with and without the use of technology

A Graphics (CAS) calculator is ESSENTIAL for this subject.

SPECIALIST MATHS 3/4

Students must have passed Mathematical Methods Units 1 and 2 and have high assessment task results.

This subject must be taken in conjunction with Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4.
