HUMANITIES - YEAR 9 ELECTIVES

History  -  Conflict and Crisis - 20th Century  

How have conflicts created crises and disasters around the world? How have wars affected populations and how have they altered the course of history? What was Australia’s role in all of this? In Crisis and Conflict (20th Century History), we will focus on the Vietnam War and the Refugee crisis. We examine political ideologies which created dictators, understand the perspectives of refugees, and how Australia’s immigration policies have altered over time and what has affected these policies.

 Topics will include:

  • Refugee Crisis   
  • Australia's Immigration Policies from 1901 - today
  • Syria Conflict 

Legal Studies  -  Human Rights and the Law

What are our human rights and how are our human rights protected around the world?  We begin this elective with an exploration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We also examine how rights are protected and abused around the world.  

Human Rights topics include: 

  • Refugee Rights
  • The Rights of Women and Children
  • The Rights of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex People
  • Human Rights Around the World

We then take a closer look at our rights as Australians through a study of our legal system.

Law topics include: 

  • Law making by parliament
  • Criminal and Civil Laws
  • Courts and the Jury System
  • Police Powers and Individual Rights
  • This unit is designed for students interested in gaining a broad knowledge as to how the legal system impacts us and our society. It prepares students for VCE Legal Studies as students will develop skills in analysing legal cases and applying legal principles.

Geography  -  The Global Challenge

In Year 9, The Global Challenge participants study the most current human and environmental issues facing the world today. This includes climate change, pollution, loss of species diversity, population growth, food security and wellbeing. 

These themes are covered in the topics: 

  • Biomes and Food Security
  • Coastal Management  
  • Geography of Wellbeing. 

The aim of this subject is not only to allow students to become up to date with the most current issues, but to research some of the creative responses to these problems, and to be part of these solutions.

In the first two topics, students learn about the characteristics and processes of natural environments and discover the ways by which we relate to and impact these. Students will receive hands-on environmental management experience through fieldwork either at a local farm, or with local coastal management groups. This not only provides context to their study, but helps students gain an understanding of the many different career options associated with Geography.

Geography of Wellbeing investigates how where you live can determine your accessibility to good quality health, education and happiness. We research the happiest countries in the world and investigate what these societies value and how they function. We also explore ways to improve our own wellbeing and that our community.

Each topic is considered from a range of scales, from a local level to a global level.

The skills learnt in this topic include critical thinking, research, collecting and analysing data and information, reading and drawing maps, and using online technology such as GPS and GIS.

This unit suits students who have an interest in the environment, global issues, health and wellbeing.

Business and Economics  -  The World as a Market Place

Have you ever heard people say money makes the world go around? They’re talking about the economy. Economics is not just money. It is about businesses and how they work. It is how the world links together. It is jobs, how you get them and why people have them. It is food and water, how we get it and where we get it from. It is taxes and allowances. It is shares and the stock market. Economics is part of all aspects of our lives. Students will gain an understanding of the foundations for business, by looking closer at the broader concepts of business and the economy in order to then refine their knowledge for VCE and prepare for life beyond school. Students will have the opportunity to use case studies and work on real examples to understand the world we live in and how we interact with it.

The knowledge gained through this unit will enhance students’ ability to solve complex problems, by exploring the big economic problem – that our world is made up of limited resources and we need to work out how to allocate them.
