## VCE MATHS METHODS

**MATHS METHODS UNIT 1/2**

**Maths Methods CAS Unit 1/ 2 is for high level Maths ability students (AusVELS level 10+)**

Maths Methods (CAS) Units 1 and 2 are designed as preparation for Maths Methods (CAS) Units 3 and 4.

The areas of study for Unit 1 and 2 are:

- Functions and Graphs
- Algebra
- Calculus
- Probability
- Statistics

Students are expected to be able to apply techniques, routines and processes involving:

- Arithmetic
- Algebra
- Equation solving
- Graph sketching with and without the use of technology

The appropriate use of Computer Algebra System (CAS) technology to support and develop the teaching and learning of mathematics, and in related assessments, will be incorporated throughout the unit.

**MATHS METHODS UNIT 3/4**

**Students need to have passed Units 1 and 2 Methods and have a good understanding of these units.**

Maths Methods Unit 3 and 4 consists of the following areas of study:

- Functions and Graphs
- Calculus
- Algebra
- Probability
- Statistics

Assumed knowledge and skills contained in Maths Methods Units (CAS) Units 1 and 2, will be used.

Students are expected to be able to apply mathematical processes involving arithmetic, algebraic manipulation, equation solving, graph sketching, differentiation and integration with and without the use of technology. Students should be familiar with relevant mental and by hand approaches in simple cases.

A Graphics (CAS) calculator is **ESSENTIAL** for this subject.
